HEAT won its first N.E. Club Championship at the popular and sold out Cranberry Olympic triathlon. A huge showing of HEAT members, new and old, assured victory
in a highly competitive division. Race conditions were close to ideal, with clear skies and calm waters. Kudos to the race director for allowing the clubs to
have their own areas in the transition. (I will send the race director a note of thanks. He pulled a lot of my buds off the waiting list.) Although some of us
placed in our age groups, (and many were near placing), we won because we showed up to race in a BIG way by our numbers and talent. Our club president, Dean,
bore his usual Cheshire cat grin upon receiving the club award.

the victory is largely attributable to your nagging, err, encouragement, of maximum participation.

This was a great accomplishment and was truly a team effort. We edged out the team from Bay State Triathlon Club by a mere 4.5 points, indicating just how
important it was to have members show up and race regardless of ability. It all fits with the theme of the club--everyone is welcome, just come and have fun.
Sitting around eating from the great spread in the perfect weather with the team afterwards was a highlight of the day for me. I agree with Jamie on the
racking method--it was so nice to have all of us together on two racks and to be able to joke around with people I knew while getting ready for the race. As
for the race itself, the swim was a little "thick" at times due to some extremely shallow sections that had a gross amount of debris kicked up from
the bottom, the bike was fairly flat and fast with a couple of really rough sections of road, and the run was similarly flat except for that stinkin' hill
at mile 5. Nothing too major, but insulting at that point of the race. As mentioned previously, the post-race spread is always impressive at this race and is
one of the best scenes on the circuit. As far as my race, I had one goal in mind from the beginning of the day--do whatever you can under the circumstances to
get points for the team. If that meant pushing for an age group place if I was having a good day, or just finishing in some way even if I had some mechanical
or physical breakdown, it did not matter where I was individually at the end of the day as long as it resulted in points for the team. That mindset really
made the whole day fun. Congratulations to all of us!!

What a beautiful day for a race! The course on the roads was shaded and really nice even on a warm day. The swim involved some bottom crawling and
substantial full contact in the over 45 corral, but was otherwise nice. This has now become my favorite Olympic course. There were a lot of good performances
which led to our victory, and numbers do make a difference. The only question I had dealt with the scoring which appeared to be rather random. I did learn that
we all need to race in our age-class wave to get points since none were awarded for Clydes, Athenas or for Bill in the Elite wave. Then again, Bill Schumann
and Jon Reik did not score anywhere for us, despite finishing as 4th overall and 1st in their age-class respectively. Anyway, my understanding of this type of
scoring is drawn from FIRM races where the scoring is done only for Team athletes. After the results are complete, all team athletes are grouped in a
spreadsheet and points are only awarded for those on teams. The system used by this race included .5 points for Diane Stuart who earned 6 by finishing as the
first person on a team in her age class. She was second overall age class so at least 5 points were the minimum. Giving points to all teams for Clydes and
Athenas, adding in Jon and Bill and correcting the rest of the scores to include only team members changes things a bit. So here are the corrected results for
what it's worth. We actually outscored ALL other teams due to our superior depth. Lessons learned: get the full roster in early and understand the scoring
rules. Anyway, great job everyone!

who thought up the scoring system, the IRS?
sounds like the capital gains calculation on porkbelly futures held in a foreign country! I was thinking about trying to get them to put in aquabike for next year, but it doesn't seem like it would count |

Yes as others stated it was a great day to race and great to be part of HEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was the first race I've done where I did not preride the bike and run. I was able to pace off of Ray on the bike though. Thanks RAY! I am embarrassed by my drafting penalty. I got
stuck in a group that I came up on fast and there were two guys who were
blocking the left of the other cyclists, so I could not safely pass as cars were going by. I started to drop back just as I heard a motorcycle come up, which I now know was a marshall. Guess I did not drop back quick enough. And yes I should know better !!!!!!!
For me the race was mentally not there. I just wanted it to end. It's been a long season for me, and it is time for a long break from structured training. Congratulations to all HEAT members who raced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mark |

I had a great time hanging around and listening to the music and stories post race. Wish i could have earned more points in my A.G. but as it turned out it was
a pretty competitive age group to be in on Sun. The drive home was kind of hard as traffic on I90 backed up 10 miles before the exit, but all in all a very
good day. The bonus was my bike was totally uneventfull!!! I think I had my best ride of the year (MPH wise). Now i'm resting up for the 5K race in
Hartford Thursday evening. That's going to hurt.

My type of course. 1st time in years I was over 20mph on the bike, even with people flying by. The swim seemed a bit short, but with only the elite wave
in front it wasn't crowded in the old guys wave.

OK, I'll try again. I had a great time at this race. I love being a part of this club and team; it's like high school cross country again only better.
After my dismal result at HealthNet I wanted to contribute as much as I could at this race, so I was happy to get a decent result. Even after arriving late and
being in the porta potty for the anthem and not getting to warm up. The team racking was fun and seemed really pro. A note of appreciation to John Pugmire-
Twice I was stopped and complimented on our uniform and our t-shirts. So it's not just us who like them.
It was fun to race on a fast course. The swim was a little odd, but fun. Dave Dyson, Mark Flynn and I all came into t1 within seconds of each other ( seemed like Winding Trails all over again ) and Dave was encouraging us all on as we headed out on the bikes. The rough roads were a little surprising to me for such a well-known race. I was riding well, but worrying I was going to flat one of those skinny little tires.... I was able to run ok at the beginning but ran into some stomach iissues around halfway which kept me from hitting that hill as hard as I might have. I had to back off and just get in at that point. Hanging out after was a highlight for me as well. A note to Mark - sometimes there's not much you can do when you come up on a group like that. You just got unlucky. I twice had to cross the yellow line ( Horrors! ) to pass groups three abreast and was lucky enough that I could see there was no traffic and there were no marshals. I have to wonder if they were tagged for blocking when you got tagged. I'm glad that we were able to put such a team in the race and it is like Jamie and Gabe have already said, But it bears repeating- this club is about eveyone getting out there regardless of ability and doing the best you can. I didn't mind the traffic on the way home because two fillet o'fish and a large decaf iced coffee works for me. Ray |

Thanks Ray.
I did see you crossing the line a couple of times...The groups ridng three abreast were frustrating as were the guys riding right on the yellow line/weaving acrossed the lane. But that's racin'.... Sometimes stuff just happens...Fortunately for me it was not an "A" race. I too thought of you, Dave, and me coming into T-1 as a Winding trails deja vu. |

Ray- you aren't supposed to stop and get compliments on the uniform while your racing. That'll slow ya down. It was a great race and course. For me personally everything came together really well. It was different starting so late- 30 minutes after the first wave.
Women 34 and under were the 2nd to last wave (only athenas, clydsdales and relays were behind me), so I was chasing down women and some men who started 5, 10,
15 minutes ahead of me.

Sorry for the delay with my report from Cranberry...after the race I headed down to the Cape for a week of much needed rest and relaxation....and that's
exactly what I did...what a beautiful week I picked.
Anyway, What a great race it was and being in the team atmosphere made it even better. Aubrey it was great to meet you and way to beat up on Ken! Erica, way to go for your first Olympic! That we were all racked together was really cool...as Mark and Ray said...it seemed like Winding Trails. And hanging out afterwards in the tent chowing on the food from the barBQ made for great camaraderie. As for my individual race, this was my target race for the year. I had originally intended this to be my first Olympic race (but I caught the team bug and decided to do Healthnet, even knowing I wouldn't be in peak condition for that race). Well all the training I did so far this year paid off. In the swim I was able to keep a strong steady stroke for most of the course, despite getting boxed in at the first buoy, having someones hand hit my goggles and knocking them askew at the second buoy...I just stood up, fixed them quickly and swam off. But from then on I seemed to have pretty clear water, but of course I kind of took the scenic route...there was some magnetic force that kept pulling me towards the shore between each bouy...or maybe I was trying to sight see...whatever it was I didn't exactly go in the straightest line...despite all that I was still 4 minutes faster that the swim in Shelton. Once out of the water I got up the stairs OK and sped off to transition...except while trying to navigate those 90 degree turns in the chute on wet grass my feet kept going straight while my body tried to make the turn and down I went but scrambled right back up, laughing. Saw Mark and Ray in transition and sped off on the bike. The bike course for me actually was kind of a disadvantage being that it was so flat and my strength is in climbing hills, but I still managed a decent 21.5 mph. Then came the run, and what a great run it was for me. For me, the run is just the opposite of the bike...I excel on the flatter courses. This was a perfect course for me. My legs felt very fresh getting off the bike, despite feeling like they were on fire the last few miles on the bike. There was a nice line of runners ahead of me, so I started picking them off one by one and before I knew it the first mile had gone by and there seemed to be no let up in how I felt....normally I can't keep a fast pace up after the first mile and start fading, but not on this day. I had ridden the run course the day before, so I knew where the inclines were and how big they were...I knew that the only one that might pose a problem would be the one at mile 5. But thanks to Dean...spotting him up ahead shortly before gave me the extra incentive to get up the hill strong and catch him...I made it up without any problem and continued on picking off runners. In the end I must have passed at least 20 people on the run which is a switch for me...I usually get passed on the run...and only one person passed me...a college kid from Syracuse. My run ended up being 43:14 for a 6:58 per mile which is awesome for me....That's a 10K PR for me, and not just for a Tri 10K. I'm very satisfied to have finished 80th overall in 2:22:31 in just my second race at this distance, and glad I was able to perform as well as I could for the team in earning my half point. WAY TO GO HEAT!!! WE ROCK!!! |
