I just got back from my altitude training in CO and had the chance to run a 5K in Lyons, CO where Tim DeBoom used to live. He has moved on to Boulder, but
Nicole still made the race this year. I got off to a great first mile, well behind the greyhounds but still a respectable 6:31. Once I started the second mile,
it felt like someone threw a sandbag on my back and by the third mile, I couldn't hold off the guy in my age class who I had cruised by earlier. I finished
as strong as I could with a 22:05 good enough for 79th overall and 5th in the 50's. I was later commenting on the effects of the elevation (5800) to the
guy who passed me for 4th. He had to remind me that the race was down-hill for the first mile then follows the St Vrain River back up thru town. It is a
deceiving climb, but really gassed me. The after race goodies were the left-overs from the Boulder-Boulder race and we all staggered away with a shopping bag
full of stuff. They still had left-overs even after the nearly 600 runners. The road between Lyons and Boulder is very similar to the parts of the Kona course
I drove and has wide shoulders and a constant stream of riders. It helped me to understand the draw for Triathletes to the Boulder area. I got to ride a little
bit of mountain roads, run some trails and would highly recommend the area for a training vacation.
I also got to run my yearly 5K on the 4th on South Hero Island in VT. Running in the thick sea level air improved my time to a 21:07 good enough for 79th again, but 12th against the tough VT 50's crowd. Back to Tri's this weekend!
