Stamford KIC IT oly tri this Sunday was a very different race for me. Two transition areas and an ocean swim. This was not an A race for me, so I was there
to see what would happen and how I would feel.
I drove the bike route the night before. That and Karen's report really helped to understand the bike route knowing what was coming up next.
Up at 3:30 to eat, and get ready, then headed over to T-2 about 5:00, set up run stuff, got body marked, and rode over to T-1 to set up stuff there.
Got a quick warmup in the water which they said was 69 degrees at start time.
This was my first ocean swim in a tri. It was a triangular course, and I started in the second wave. I felt good during the swim, 26:51 and 95th overall.
Headed up beach and into T-1 got wetsuit off, bike stuff on, swim stuff in bag to be brought to T-2, and then off onto bike.
I bobbled the shoes on bike bare foot mount a bit, but then was off and riding. There was some confusion as to which side of the road racers were supposed to be on, you were supposed to be going against traffic for the start....The route headed out for a loop through a very nice point neighborhood, and then passed by the beach. Then the route headed through some not so nice neighborhoods, both area and road conditions, followed by a quick tour through downtown Stamford, passed T-2, and then out to a more rural area, think Granby hills. After some nice short rolling climbs and narrow roads, you get a nice mostly fast downhil back into Stamford to T-2. I was able to pass alot of people on the bike, and ended up with a 1:10:22 for a 23rd overall. A quick T-2 where I had to "disturb" a couple who somehow though the transition area was a good area to sit down
. Then headed out on the run for two loops through downtown area. Fairly flat
run and the sun was nice to hide behind overcast skies for a good portion. I felt like crap at the beginning of the run, but my legs came around quickly and I
was able to hold a fairly good pace behind a woman who ended up being the 3rd placed female overall, but slowed a bit on the last couple of miles. My time
ended up 42:25 for 25th overall. My total time was 2:23:05 and 26th/262 overall and a new OLY PR for me
. After cooling down a bit I walked right into the massage area and got a nice
10 minute massage, no one else was there. Then I got somemore to eat, picked up my stuff and headed back to hotel, took a quick shower, and went back to check
the results. Not in top three in AG so no need to hang around, went back to hotel and headed home.
I have to say a well run event by Beth and her crew at HMF. Also for a first time race I think they pulled off an excellent event!
