Shoreline Sharks Free Half Marathon Sunday 4/13

The Shoreline Sharks do an annual free Half Marathon and this years race is scheduled for 4/13/08 at 8AM in . They have graciously extended an invitation for other clubs to join them this year. If you are interested, please send a note to Clint Tebbetts at shorelinesharks@comcast.net so that he can plan for the numbers who attend. There are already several committed HEAT folks who will be down there. Although the course is on open roads, it will be well marked. Anyone for a nice training run or an early half?

Shoreline Sharks Half Marathon: Apr 13, 2008 8:00 AM

The Shoreline Sharks Half Marathon is a FREE Race that debuted back in December, 2003 with a dozen brave souls. It is a challenging course with a beautiful 2 mile finish along the beach. The Race will be timed, marked and have aid stations.

Warning....inquiring about the race automatically signs you up for the event. Looks like we need some HEAT ladies so we can get a full team.

Yikes -- I just got the email also. I'll be there, but certainly won't be burning up the roads with speed.
I'm hoping Dean can make it. Sure could use some other members to handle the top 5.

It was a nice morning for a run and I thought the course was a nice challenge!!! It started out with an easy 4 miles, followed by 5 challenging miles (uphill grunts, and quad buster descents), then 4 easy miles to finish off the 1/2 marathon.

Unfortunately we only had 2 women show up so we didn't have enough for a team, but the 2 who did show were awesome (I'm horrible at remembering names - but one of them was first woman overall). I think there 7 of us guys who showed up (which included a trimmed down, raced 7 hours on Sat. version of Rafeal) to participate on the run. I believe Miro was the first overall HEATSER as he too looked to be getting into peak shape for the upcoming season. All in all I think we had a pretty good time and I would recommend this to anyone if we get the invite again next year.

Clint and the "Sharks" put on a terrific event yesterday.

Perfert weather, a great (but challenging) well marked course, aid stations with at least 30 volunteers, and after race prizes. We were a bit outnumbered (some no shows...

) but the 8 of us that showed had a good time. Miro lead the way with a 5th place finish overall, with Ironmen Tony L, and Dave C. close behind. Cheryl C. gets the MVP for the 1st overall woman in 1:37 and a great showing by new HEATSTER Kathy Schultz.
Rafael did his usual 7 hour adventure race on Saturday and still blasted the run. Mike kept me company the 1st 10 miles, and then took off and ran down 6 people the last 3 miles.

Hey Doug -- did you switch TEAMS somewhere along the course? (#25?).

Here are the "official" results and a note from Clint.

The 6^th Annual Shoreline Sharks Half Marathon was a huge success. Thanks for being a part of it. Having the 3 Big Connecticut Tri Teams come together to race and have fun and get to know each other is important,
First of all I need to express my deepest thanks the volunteers who came today and made it all possible.
Mike B: Mike was the SAG bike today. Mike is also the person who made all of the race signage and Sharks banner. It's his tent too!
Chris H: Chris was the lead bike and commented that Josh (the lead runner) was going so fast uphill he got dropped J. Thanks Chris!
Jerry was the official timer and the leader of the finish line crew. He timed, brought raffle stuff, cups and pins. He also thinks he's Mr. Funnyman!
Leslie M: Leslie was solo at Aid Station #1 and at the Jones Hill Road crossing. Excellent job.
Cara was there with Terri crossing people to Captain Thomas's sidewalk for safety. She was also the race photographer and you can see her shots below.
Tracy W/baby on way was at Aid Station #2 very active and keeping good vibes. They also helped the timing of the race.
Priscilla was with Tracy and then when Aid Station #2 closed down they came over to help Jerry with the timing logistics, A professional job was done! Thanks
Big Scott B was crossing us safely in that uphill intersection at mile 5.5 and then he helped us cross down over near the finish. Just having him there made everyone aware and to be cautious.
Aid station 3 had Matt and Kevin keeping us on course and they were ready with the cup!
We were supposed to have a crossing over a 4 way stop intersection but he never showed up but it worked out OK,
We had Lauren and Sean direct traffic and people to ZIG-ZAG across Morgan Lane. Great work. That can be hairy!!!
Doug, Steve and Danny were manning Aid station #4 and making sure people crossed down Chase Lane after the steep downhill, they had fluid and helped us back across Jones hill.
We had Leslie again crossing us where Colonial crossed Jones hill.
We had Nicolai (at his house) with Kyle at Aid Station #5 and before that they crossed you over Washington ave and Campbell ave on Main St, before they set up the aid station.Scott was left to cross people over Ocean ave. so that could finish along the wide sidewalk to the line.

We all made it back safe and happy. All possible by the awesome help from the volunteers. Three cheers for them!!!

Cheryl and Kathy ROCK!! I love being in HEAT but man I'm getting tired of getting left in the dust by all of you. A very special 'nuts to you' goes out to Mr. Genesis-Adventure-race-the-day-before Raf. The dude was walking a hill in front of me and I still couldn't catch him. Savage. All the HEATSTERs looked so freaking STRONG!

That's funny about the wrong team - I don't know how that happened, but I guess I scored 5th place for Team Mossman! Y'know, for a moment I thought you were impugning a certain orientation I'm quite happy with! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to use the pimp emoticon there.

Totally great volunteers and race support, good signage, everything was really excellently done; the Sharks put on a great event. I hope this goes on next year ++, too, I highly recommend.
