This was my 4th year competing (if you can call it that) in the St. Croix (USVI) Swim Race. I initially signed up because it seemed like such an incredible distance (5 miles!) but I return because it's just a great place to vacation. Each year brings a mix of returning swimmers and families and a surprising number of first time open water swimmers. This year there was an Olympic relay team consisting of Amanda Beard, Margaret Hoelzer, and...

This weekend I finally got the chance to do my first adventure race. What better way to start than to go with our true team ironman Rafael. I was very uneasy about the what the conditions would be like after the torrential rains and wind on Friday night. When Raf and I arrived at Harriman Park (NY) Saturday morning in the dark, it was moist & cool. With no rain and a warm forecast we went with our Heat bike jerseys and were a bit overheated by the end. Like Tri's, you have to have the...

Hey guys! Glad to be back home! What a race. I don't think I've ever heard of so much madness. Michellie Jones with a perforated ear drum, Badmann hits a cone at 10K on the bike and goes out, Al Sultan DNSs due to flu, Stadler barfs on the bike out near Hawi (I saw the barf on his bike after the race!), Ficker and Zeiger chalk up 4+ hr marathons, 22 pros DNF! Just madness...

Things went well for me, although they got painful on miles 17-23 on the run, but hey, that's what next...

Well as many of you know I went down to Va. to participate in an off-road ironman for the second year. If you have ever done an Xterra race, then you know that this can be very demanding on the body, and even more so with an iron distance. The results weren't quite what I had hoped for. I had stop after the first loop of the run due to injury's. But here is the race report. It started out with a foggy morning. The swim was in a lake in Douthat State Park that was just barely big enough...

I got a second chance to complete my half ironman this past weekend. The weather could not have been more different than the previous year -- conditions were absolutely perfect --cooler than last weekend but certainly not cold, and less wind than is typical for Montauk. The water was nice and calm for the swim--my swim was not as good as last week (40 compared to 37) but felt about the same so I think the distance was a little short at LakeWaramaug. Note to self that I need to find a way...

Y'know, 9 times out of 10, the rumor mill is wrong. Well, yesterday, the 1 time out of 10, it was right. This race's bike course was lethal! I wear a Polar heart rate monitor with an altimeter, so I was able to define how nasty this course was. As a frame of reference, the total climbing at Ironman Lake Placid was about 7100 feet over the 112 miles.
It started as a fleece and gloves morning in the pre-dawn hour and looked like it would be a very cold race. But, the sun came out and it warmed up steadily through the race resulting in perfect running conditions. The ocean was as calm and flat as any lake swim and the water was pretty comfortable.
